ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- Turner Elson put up a lot of points in junior, but it was his first professional goal that ignited the Abbotsford Heat Friday night. Elson scored with 4.6 seconds to go in the second period to even the score against the Milwaukee Admirals, contributing to the Heats 3-2 overtime victory in American Hockey League action. "It was obviously the turning point of the game," said Abbotsford head coach Troy Ward. "If we go down after two, its a different game. It certainly gave us some momentum and gave our young kids some energy in the locker room. We went into the third with a different mindset after that." Brett Olson flipped the puck ahead and Elson jumped around Admirals defender Anthony Bitetto to one-hand the puck past goalie Magnus Hellberg. "I tried to get past the defenceman and I saw the goalie wasnt going out for it, and I got my stick on it and chipped it over his foot there," said Elson, who played three games over two seasons for the Heat on a tryout basis. "The first goal as a pro, its been a long time waiting," said the former Red Deer Rebel. "You dream of getting your first goal as a pro -- maybe not as greasy as mine, but they all count in the end." Greg Nemisz scored the winner at 1:58 of overtime. Corban Knight, who had two assists, rushed down the wing and found Nemisz standing in front. He redirected it past Hellberg for his first of the season. "It wasnt pretty but we got a big goal at the end there," said Heat alternate captain Carter Bancks. "Thats how you win hockey games." Ben Hanowski also scored for Abbotsford (2-1-0) in the clubs home opener. Reto Berra stopped 24 shots in the victory. "Both goalies, I thought, stole the show," said Ward. "They both made outstanding saves and took some pucks away from guys that maybe they thought they could squeeze by. Reto battled very hard to find pucks, which was key." Patrick Cehlin had a goal and an assist for the Admirals in their season opener, while Taylor Beck also scored for Milwaukee. Magnus Hellberg made 28 saves. After a scoreless first period, the visitors drew first blood while shorthanded. Austin Watson stole the puck from Abbotsfords Chad Billins behind the net and centred for Cehlin, who slid a backhand around Berras poke check attempt at 6:45. The Heat took their first lead of the game at 13:11 of the third when Hanowski went top shelf from in close. He began the play by hounding a Milwaukee defenceman into giving the puck away to Knight, who found Josh Jooris down low. Jooris quickly tapped it across to Hanowski for his third of the season. "One of the things Ben has been able to do his whole career -- high school and St. Cloud State -- is score goals," said Ward. "He seems to be fitting into that same role here. Hes off to a good start. Hes had key goals for us. It was a good pass by Jooris, but still, its a goal scorers goal when you tuck it under the bar short side there." The Admirals tied the game a little more than two minutes later. After a point shot bounced off a few bodies in front, the puck squirted right to Beck, who lifted it over the sprawling netminder for his first goal of the season. However, Beck got called for a tripping penalty in overtime and the Heat took advantage. "It was definitely big for our team," said Knight. "We had a good push in the third and got that goal, and then they scored to get us back on our heels. It was important to push back, especially in overtime, to get that goal. It would have been disappointing if we didnt get that win tonight." Abbotsford finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage, while Milwaukee was 0-for-4. Marquise Goodwin Bills Jersey . Burke is expected to miss two to three months after breaking a finger in the teams third preseason game. Tinsley, a 10-year veteran, spent the last two seasons in Utah, where the point guard averaged 3. The nimble-footed quarterback got his wish, dashing through the snow and a weary defence all the way into the NCAA record book. Bruce Smith Jersey . But now that hes in the NHL, the Calgary Flames centre showed big improvement in that department by scoring the winner in the eighth round of a 5-4 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday. Preston Brown Bills Jersey . However, he did make them miss him a little less. Cundiff, who had the unenviable job of replacing Dawson last season, agreed Thursday to a one-year, $1. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Tampa Bay Rays didnt lose their edge during their recent slide. Theyre still strategizing with a World Series in mind. Saving Chris Archers right arm is one example, and he was so good on Friday night there was no concern of overexertion. Archer spun six scoreless innings, and the Rays added to their slim wild-card lead by beating the Minnesota Twins 3-0. "There was no moment that really showed up. He pretty much had his way," said manager Joe Maddon, who was more than satisfied with 87 pitches by the rookie. "I just want to really eye him up, because our intent is to play well into October, and I want to make sure that hes well." The Rays hold the second wild-card spot with four teams still in striking range. They nudged their advantage to 1 1/2 games over Cleveland, due to a loss by New York that pushed the Yankees to two games back. Baltimore (2 1/2 games behind) and Kansas City (3 1/2) are lurking, too. Archer (9-7) scattered three singles and struck out seven without a walk, following a pair of rough outings to start September. In his 20th start, he lowered his ERA to 3.03. "I still feel mentally and physically there. But I have an understanding of the big picture and maybe saving a couple extra innings, just in case if we do make that magical playoff run," Archer said. Yunel Escobar had an RBI double among his three hits for the Rays, and Desmond Jennings and James Loney drove in runs with singles against Kevin Correia (9-12), whose defence behind him was less than ideal. "We need to make the plays that should be made. Were not good enough to make up for that right now," Correia said. After losing 13 of 17 games, the Rays picked up an important victory on Thursday night over AL East-leading Boston on a tiebreaking eighth-inning double by rookie standout Wil Myers. The Rays started their weekend reprieve against the floundering Twins before 11 straight games against wild-card competitors Texas, the Orioles and Yankees. Tampa Bay has won 10 straight games against the Twins, including five this year. The Twins, who lost 15 of their last 118 home games, struck out 11 times.dddddddddddd "I know hittings not easy. Ive been there. But you have to defend the plate. You have to put the ball in play. You have no chance when you dont swing," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. Correia, who leads the Twins in wins, starts, innings and strikeouts, left with no outs and two on in the seventh, and reliever Caleb Thielbar escaped with a popped-up bunt by Ben Zobrist that became a double play and a pickoff throw that caught David DeJesus stealing. That was about the only sequence for the Rays that went wrong. Archer took advantage of the weakened Twins lineup, missing star Joe Mauer and a whole lot more, and never let a runner advance past second base. In the fifth inning, he hit Darin Mastroianni with a pitch to put two on with one out. But Archer retired Clete Thomas and Eduardo Escobar on called third strikes, skipping off the mound and pumping his arm with a clenched fist on his way to the dugout. His changeup was extra sharp. "Ive had games where its been decent, but tonight was the best its been in my career," Archer said. Jake McGee, Joel Peralta and Fernando Rodney each pitched a scoreless inning in relief, and Rodney recorded his 35th save in 43 tries with a perfect ninth. So Archer left the game in good hands, even if he felt he couldve pitched longer. "Hes got a long career ahead of him, so at one point hes got to understand that and realize its not a bad thing," catcher Jose Molina said. NOTES: Mauer (concussion) felt good working out for the second straight day, and general manager Terry Ryan said the team will consider taking him on the road next week. ... RHP Jesse Crain, who has yet to pitch for the Rays since being acquired in a July trade with the White Sox because of a shoulder problem, might be ready for game action next week. ... LHP Matt Moore (15-3, 3.18 ERA) will try to extend his seven-game winning streak on Saturday for the Rays, against Twins rookie LHP Andrew Albers (2-2, 3.35 ERA). ... Zobrist became the Rays leader in career walks, passing Carlos Pena on the franchise list.
