DENVER -- In foul trouble early, Gerald Green spent much of the first half stewing on the bench. He spent the rest of the game making up for lost playing time. Green scored a career-high 36 points, including eight in overtime, and the Phoenix Suns beat Denver 112-107 on Tuesday night to hand the Nuggets their fifth consecutive loss. "I just got into foul trouble kind of early," said Green, held to nine first-half points in 8:41 after picking up three fouls. "When I was on the bench, I was getting mad, but my teammates were telling me I had the whole second half to play. I just tried to stay in it and help my team win. Guys were setting screens for me and Goran (Dragic) was finding me." Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said Greens early foul trouble prevented him from having an even bigger night. "We told Gerald if he wasnt fouling so much, he might have had 50," Hornacek said. "When Gerald gets on those rolls, hes big for us because he can make those shots. Hes not afraid to take shots when the game was on the line. He made a couple of big ones for us." So did Dragic. He added 21 points and 14 assists for the Suns, who completed a four-game season sweep of the Nuggets, their first in nine years. Evan Fournier scored 25 to lead the Nuggets, who lost a tough, close game after being blown out in their previous four defeats. "We really wanted to win this one for the fans because we havent been playing very well," Fournier said. "Yeah, its tough, especially because we had it. We had the game with 35 seconds (left in regulation) and gave up two offensive rebounds." Kenneth Faried added 21 points and 10 rebounds for Denver, which was without leading scorer Ty Lawson (broken left rib) for a third consecutive game. Green opened the Suns scoring in the extra period with a driving dunk and hit an 18-foot jumper to tie the score at 103. After a jump ball, Dragic got loose for a breakaway dunk that put Phoenix back on top with 56.2 seconds left in overtime. Wilson Chandler missed a long jumper, the Suns rebounded and Green was fouled, making both free throws to boost their lead to four with 15.5 seconds left. Fournier, though, converted a three-point play with 8.7 seconds to go. The Nuggets quickly fouled Green, who made both free throws, and the Suns responded by fouling Faried, who made one of two. After Marcus Morris hit one of two foul shots, J.J. Hickson missed a potential tying 3-pointer and the Suns hung on. After Phoenix took a 90-87 lead on a layup by Morris with 5:44 remaining in regulation, the Nuggets scored the next seven points, moving in front by four on a putback by Faried. A pair of free throws by P.J. Tucker pulled Phoenix to 96-94, but Randy Foye answered on the other end with a driving layup. Channing Frye drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key that pulled the Suns to 99-97 with 35.8 seconds left. Fournier then missed a contested running jumper in the lane, and Phoenix got the rebound with 17.8 seconds remaining. Markieff Morris put back an offensive rebound to tie it at 99 with 5.7 seconds left and, after Chandler missed a baseline jumper at the buzzer, the game went to overtime. The Suns went in front 76-75 with 3:30 remaining in the third, helped by Fryes 3-pointer and a jumper by Markieff Morris. But the Nuggets closed with a 12-0 run in the last 2:23 of the period, erasing an 11-point deficit to take a 77-76 lead into the fourth quarter. Phoenix led by as many as 14 points early but settled for a 52-51 advantage at halftime. NOTES: Chandler, who finished with 10 points, has scored in double digits in 29 of his last 31 games. ... This should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season. http://www.soccerbelgiumonline.com/Jordan-Lukaku-U...um-Jers ey/ http://www.soccerbelgiumonline.com/Nicolas-Lombaer...um-Jers ey/ . It was the kind of score that might make everyone else wonder which course he was playing. Except that Graeme McDowell saw the whole thing. Crouched behind the 10th green at Sheshan International, McDowell looked over at the powerful American and said, "Ive probably seen 18 of the best drives Ive seen all year in the last two days. http://www.soccerbelgiumonline.com/Luis-Pedro-Cava...um-Jers ey/ . - Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie never doubted he would bring back coach Dennis Allen for a third year despite back-to-back 4-12 records.MINNEAPOLIS -- Justin Verlanders curveball was snapping, Torii Hunters bat was clicking and the Detroit Tigers appeared to be creeping ever closer to locking up their third straight AL Central title. When their bullpen couldnt hold the lead against Minnesotas anemic offence, another chance to reduce their magic number went swirling down the drain. Josmil Pinto hit an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Twins overcame 12 strikeouts by Verlander to beat the Tigers 4-3 on Monday night. The Tigers led 3-0 in the eighth, but Jose Veras gave up RBI doubles to Eduardo Escobar and pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit. Brian Dozier led off the ninth with a tying homer against previously perfect closer Joaquin Benoit. Dozier opened the 11th with a single off Luke Putkonen (1-2) and advanced on a wild pitch. Pinto punched a single to right field to give manager Ron Gardenhire his 998th career victory. Verlander gave up six hits and walked three in six shutout innings for the Tigers, who entered needing two wins -- or one victory and a loss by idle Cleveland -- to lock up the division. "Obviously, its tough," Verlander said. "Were sitting here knocking on the door and every win counts. It was a tough pill to swallow, but thats the lovely thing about baseball. We come out here tomorrow and we have another day and another crack at a win." Anthony Swarzak (3-2) pitched the 11th for the win. Hunter had two doubles, a single and an RBI for Detroit. Miguel Cabrera had two hits and an RBI while moving gingerly on a sore groin that kept him out of Sundays loss to the White Sox. It was a rare stumble for Benoit, who has stabilized the shaky back end of the bullpen since becoming the full-time closer. He had converted 22 straight save chances this season. But the struggles by Veras caused manager Jim Leyland to go to his closer far earlier than he would have liked, and Benoit came on with one out in the eighth to try for a rare five-out save. "I dont even consider that a blown save because youre asking him to do an awful lot," Leyland said. "Hes been absolutely fantastic. Hes a very,, very outstanding pitcher.dddddddddddd" After three straight underwhelming outings by his lofty standards, Verlander was back to his untouchable self against the overmatched Twins. With his curveball bending and his slider biting as well as they ever have, Verlander struck out the side in the second and third -- and the whiffs kept coming. "He looked like his old self," Dozier said. "His breaking ball was really moving and he was punching guys out." Five times Verlander got the Twins looking for strike three, four of them with wicked curveballs that froze the hitters. One of them buckled Chris Parmelees knees for his 10th strikeout of the game in the fourth inning. Verlander topped 200 strikeouts for the fifth straight year. "I think I had the best breaking ball Ive had all year," Verlander said. "It was really sharp. It was good. I was able to go to it when I wanted to and throw it for strikes." The right-hander had been tagged for 10 earned runs in his last three starts, a bothersome little skid as the playoffs approach. He also entered the night with a pedestrian 13-12 record and 3.66 ERA that is ordinary by his standards. Maybe an outing against the meagre Twins offence will be enough to get him back in the groove. It was Verlanders third double-digit strikeout game of the season, and first since he fanned 13 Pirates on May 27. Mike Pelfrey gave up one run on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings for the Twins. "The math doesnt change," Leyland said. "Somehow weve got to win two games."
