MONTREAL -- Quebecers want to bring Major League Baseball back to Montreal, according to results of a poll announced Tuesday. The poll of 1,589 people taken by Leger Marketing showed 69 per cent were in favour of baseballs return to the city. Only 11 per cent were opposed, and those mostly due to what it may cost. Partial results of the poll, which was commissioned by the Montreal board of trade as part of a feasibility study on getting a team, were announced at a news conference called by the Montreal Baseball Project. The project, spearheaded by former Expos outfielder Warren Cromartie, is hoping to revive major league ball in a city that saw the Montreal Expos leave after the 2004 season to become the Washington Nationals. They said 40 per cent of those polled were ready to buy tickets for up to $40 each, while the average MLB ticket price is $27. Board president Michel Leblanc said the poll results convinced the board to continue work on the project. He said results of the feasibility study are to be made public in November. Leblanc said his talks with baseball officials reveled a new, downtown stadium would be preferred if the city is to get a team. Cromartie said three potential sites downtown have been identified, but he preferred not to say where. He said his talks with Major League Baseball officials have been "very positive," but that there were some still opposed to a return to Montreal. He confirmed that his group and the Evenko entertainment company will organize a tribute to the 1994 Expos, which led the major leagues with a 74-40 record when the season was cancelled by lockout. Most of the players on that team are expected to attend. It is to be held March 29 at Olympic Stadium in conjunction with a pre-season game between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets. Cromartie said its important that the game draws a big crowd to show baseball that the fans want their team back. Fans can also buy tickets to a dinner and cocktail event at which tribute will be paid to Felipe Alou, who managed the Expos from 1992 to 2001, and former pitcher Claude Raymond, the first Quebecer to play for the team from 1969 to 1971.
