EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Two wins dont make a playoff contender, unless youre in the NFC East. Despite opening the season with six straight losses, the New York Giants (2-6) remarkably are still in the playoff hunt heading into their bye week. The Giants won their second straight game Sunday with a 15-7 decision over the Eagles in Philadelphia. Things only got better after the game when Detroit staged a furious last-minute rally to knock off the division-leading Dallas Cowboys (4-4). The mathematics are simple. New York is two games behind with eight to play. Its not the best position and the chances that the Giants will make the playoffs are not good unless they run the table. Still, its a chance the Giants are lucky to have. Nowitzki missed all three of his shots and was held scoreless in the opening quarter. But he warmed up in the second, knocking down Dallas first six points for a 16-0 run that extended the lead to 34-23. The Mavericks maintained a double-digit edge through most of the second and third quarters, going to the final period up 75-64. Their biggest lead was 66-49 midway through the third. NOTES: Kyle Korver skipped his second straight game with bruised ribs, again delaying his quest to set an NBA record for consecutive games with a 3-point basket.
