TORONTO -- Holger Osieck wont see too many familiar faces when he surveys the Canadian roster to meet his Socceroos on Oct. 15 at Londons Craven Cottage. Osieck, now in charge of 53rd-ranked Australia, managed Canada from 1998 to 2003. Most famously he led "Holgers Heroes" to victory in the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, earning the Canadians a trip to Japan for the Confederations Cup. When he stepped down after a disastrous 2003 Gold Cup, the no-nonsense German coach left with a record of 20-17-9 and Canada ranked 78th in the world. The Canadian men, currently ranked 106th in the world, are now under the guidance of newly appointed manager Benito Floro. Frank Yallop, Dale Mitchell, and Stephen Hart filled the gap between Osieck and Floro, with Colin Miller and Tony Fonseca doing interim duty. Of the Floro roster announced Wednesday for the London friendly, only goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld remains from the last Canadian starting 11 fielded by Osieck in that 2003 Gold Cup. Striker Iain Hume and midfielder Atiba Hutchinson are also in the Floro squad. They came on as a substitutes in the second half of the 2-0 loss to Cuba that proved to be Canadas swansong at the tournament. Attacking midfielder Dwayne De Rosario was also part of the Osieck era, although he was injured for the 2003 tournament. Midfielder Julian de Guzman was allowed to stay with his German club side. All four are in Floros squad. Australia, whose lineup features such veterans as goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, defender Lucas Neill and striker Tim Cahill, booked its ticket to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with a 1-0 victory over Iraq in June. Canada failed, once again, in its qualifying bid. Australia will play France in Paris on Oct. 11 before meeting Canada. Cahill will equal Peter Wilsons record of 60 matches as Socceroos captain if he skippers the team against both France and Canada. Osieck says the Canada game will offer some new players a chance to shine. "If they do well, they have the opportunity to stay. And if they dont do well, I will look for other people," he said in an interview on the Football Federation Australia website. The Australians were thrashed 6-0 last month in Brazil in their last outing. "What we learned definitely is that we still have a long way to go" said Osieck. "We played a top-class opponent, probably one of the best teams in the world, on their home soil and at that stage our team was not ready." Floros 21-man roster for the Australia game features seven MLS players including four from Toronto FC: defenders Ashtone Morgan and Doneil Henry and midfielders Kyle Bekker and Jonathan Osorio. Midfielder-forward Russell Teibert comes from the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Australia game falls in FIFAs international match window Nov. 15-19. Still, Portland captain Will Johnson is not on the roster. The Timbers, who are in the thick of the playoff race in MLSs Western Conference, have games Oct. 13 and 19. The Canadian Soccer Association said Johnson was not called in "for personal reasons." All 21 players selected featured in Floros first camp -- in Spain last month -- as Canadian manager. Canada played No. 150 Mauritania twice during that camp, losing 1-0 and tying 0-0. The Spaniard has also summoned Michael Petrasso and Dylan Carreiro from Queens Park Rangers Elite Development Squad to take part in the training camp. "This camp and match against Australia will be important as we continue to work on establishing our teams tactical structure," Floro said in a statement. Canada last played Australia in a 1993 FIFA World Cup qualifier when Canada was eliminated from contention on penalty kicks. Craven Cottage is the West London home to English Premier League side Fulham. --- Canada roster Goalkeepers: Milan Borjan, Sivasspor (Turkey); Lars Hirschfeld, Valerenga Fotball (Norway). NEWARK, N.J. -- Devils coach Pete DeBoer has been looking for one of his goalies to get hot and take over the majority of the playing time. Marty Brodeur gave DeBoer a clear answer Saturday night with one of his best games of the season. Dainius Zubrus scored two goals in the third period and Brodeur made 33 saves, leading the New Jersey Devils past the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-0. "Its exactly what we needed at the right time," DeBoer said of Brodeur. "That game (Friday, 3-2 loss to the Penguins) night took a lot out of us and I knew the difference was going to be the goaltending." Brodeur earned his third shutout of the season and 124th of his career. "I know for me, its always been hard not to be there all the time," Brodeur said. "Its the way it is when you have two guys who can play. It always makes decisions difficult." Jaromir Jagr assisted on both goals to raise his assist total to 1,024. Damien Brunners seventh goal had broken the scoreless tie in the second period. "It was a really nice pass and it doesnt happen a lot these days," Brunner said. "I was able to generate some speed and Geli (Eric Gelinas) made a great pass." Jagr skated behind the net and passed to Zubrus on doorstep of the crease for the goal at 6:44 of the period. Then, at 9:36, Jagr put a backhand shot on goal and Zubrus was there to knock in the rebound for his seventh goal and a 3-0 advantage. Brodeur came up with two of his best saves in the third to thwart the Lightning. First, he turned away a breakaway chance with a pad save on Nikita Kucherovs shot. Then he smothered a point-blank shot by J.T. Brown. "I have no clue," when asked how he made the save on Kucherov.dddddddddddd "I didnt feel it and didnt know what it was. I got lucky." Brunner scored at the 15:37 mark. Rookie defenceman Eric Gelinas made a pass up the middle to Brunners stick, just before the blue line. Brunner got between two defenders for a break on goal, deked to his left and then pushed a forehand past Lightning goalie Anders Lindback. Mark Fayne was credited with an assist. The Lightning put pressure on Brodeur in the second period, outshooting the Devils 14-5. Before Brunners goal, Brodeur had Martin St. Louis muttering to himself in the second period after the Devils goalie foiled a scoring chance by the Lightnings star. St. Louis received a pass in front and wristed a high shot from the point that Brodeur managed to grab out of the air with his glove. "Marty was Marty tonight, for sure," St. Louis said. "I didnt get a lot of wood on it and I was frustrated. It was a good save. We were surging and had chances, but they got the second goal, that made it tough." In the first minute of the third period, Brunner was denied a second goal when Lindback came up with a big save on a shot from the right circle. NOTES: The Devils were 3 for 3 in penalty kills vs. the Lighting, giving them the best penalty kill percentage in the NHL .933 (42 of 45). ... Tampa Bay star Steve Stamkos joined his teammates for the morning skate at the Prudential Center on Saturday, 33 days after breaking his leg in a collision with a goal post. "My 4-week X-ray looks good. Im just trying to progress," said Stamkos in a video on the Lightning website. Stamkos had 14 goals and 23 points in 17 games before the Nov. 11 injury sustained in Boston.
