Pryors announcement leaves the six-foot-six, 233-pound quarterback with several options: Make himself available for the next NFL supplemental draft, which would commence once the lockout ends; sign with Saskatchewan or a team in the United Football League this year; sit out the 2011 season, work with a quarterback coach and wait for the 2012 NFL draft. Pryors lawyer, Larry James, has said entering the NFL supplemental draft is Pryors first choice. But the lockout has created no shortage of uncertainty south of the border regarding when the NFL will re-open for business. On Wednesday, James wouldnt divulge whether hes spoken to the Riders. Hed only say Pryor is keeping all of his options open and playing football in Canada is one possibility. "It is an option, absolutely," James said via telephone from his Columbus office. James is currently serving as Pryors legal advisor, adding the star quarterback has yet to hire an agent to help him consider his options. "Ive recommended he start looking very soon at who is going to be the person or agent that hes going to utilize to vet all these options and do this for a living," said James. "I do not." Pryor enjoyed a stellar career at Ohio State, amassing a 31-4 record as a starter. He threw for 6,177 yards and his 2,164 yards rushing is a school record for quarterbacks. Pryor also guided the Buckeyes to three Big Ten championships. But its not as if the Riders are in dire need of a quarterback. Starter Darian Durant was the CFLs leading passer last year and has guided Saskatchewan to consecutive Grey Cup appearances. The Riders also have veteran Ryan Dinwiddie and former Florida standout Chris Leak competing for the backup spot, with sophomore Cole Bergquist also in the mix. But if Pryor signed with Saskatchewan, hed be obligated to stay there for at least two years -- the minimum length of a CFL contract -- because CFL players can no longer sign NFL contracts once reaching the option year of their Canadian-based deals. There are other factors working against Pryor coming to the CFL. First of all, theres having to learn the nuances of a three-down game thats played on a longer, wider field. And theres also the issue of playing time as Durant is the Riders clear-cut starter and holding a clipboard and watching from the sidelines wouldnt exactly expedite Pryors development as a pro quarterback. Whats more, the Riders have already started training camp, meaning Pryors learning curve would be that much steeper even if he signed with the CFL club immediately. That would make the UFL, in its third year of operation, a much better option because its a brand of football Pryor is much more familiar with. The five-team league will kick off an eight-game regular season schedule Aug. 12 and finish up with its championship final Oct. 23. More importantly, once the UFL season ended Pryor would be free to negotiate with any NFL team. Since the end of the 2010 season, 25 UFL players signed futures contracts with NFL squads.
