WINNIPEG -- Veteran Bomber Doug Brown is accusing the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of dirty tricks in signing former Winnipeg receiver Terence Jeffers-Harris on the eve of the CFLs East Division final. Under league rules, a player cut after the Oct. 12 trade deadline can be signed by another team but not activated. "At first, I was like, Well, why would they pick him up when he cant play at all? " Brown said after practice Friday. "So when its that obvious that hes going on the practice squad just as an espionage tactic, man. I mean, you do what you can to win games in the post-season, but I just think thats a little morally ambiguous for the situation. "But at the same time, so be it. I dont really care. If we were too worried about it, we probably wouldnt have let him go in the first place." Still, Brown doesnt believe Jeffers-Harris could give his new teammates any real valuable secrets. "Its not like hes got the chemical analysis for kryptonite for the Winnipeg offence," said the 11-year defensive tackle who is retiring after this season. "Our biggest problem this year has been figuring out what were going to put out on the field, let alone what everyone else knows or thinks were going to attempt to do." Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille, meanwhile, said he hadnt talked to Jeffers-Harris about Winnipegs gameplan. "We have 18 games of film on them and they have 18 games of film on us," responded Bellefeuille after constant badgering from reporters about any advantage Jeffers-Harris brings. "I dont think theres any major secrets." He said the Ticats have had their eye on Jeffers-Harris for the past two years and had inquired about him in the past. "Hes strictly here for the future," Bellefeuille said, adding he plans to see him in training camp next season. Jeffers-Harris lost his starting role this season but played in Winnipegs final regular-season game. He was squeezed off the roster this season by Greg Carr and rookie Clarence Denmark. He only had 29 catches for 347 yards and two touchdowns in eight games, including one reception for 13 yards in his last contest when he replaced an injured Carr. After Jeffers-Harris was released, Winnipeg head coach Paul LaPolice said it was because the second-year wide receiver had been violating team rules. Reports said he was late or missed two meetings this week. When asked about any possible personal troubles Jeffers-Harris may have, Bellefeuille said: "His character is good, his character is fine." LaPolice wouldnt speculate on Hamiltons motives for signing Jeffers-Harris. He also downplayed the information Jeffers-Harris could give the Ticats. "Its different if we were taking a starting quarterback or somebody who had intimate knowledge," LaPolice said. "I think hell maybe know some things, but we have over a hundred concepts in the package so that shouldnt be an issue." While Jeffers-Harris could have been suspended rather than released, LaPolice said they didnt go that way because they didnt think Hamilton would pick him up. "It didnt cross my mind because I dont think we would do that as an organization," he said. Ticat defensive co-ordinator Corey Chamblin told local reporters while hes spoken to Jeffers-Harris, theres not much useful information a defence can use. "Theres nothing that a player can tell you about a coach," Chamblin said. "They can tell you theyre working this, theyre working that. "Theres 60 plays in a game. He cant tell you exactly when theyre going to call them." Chamblin said if he really wanted information, he would bring a coach over to this side. "Paul LaPolice has run trick plays," Chamblin said. "We know there will be trick plays. We know there will be screens versus zero (man-to-man coverage). There will be a run game and deep shots to (number) 84. "I think you guys (reporters) know the same thing. He cant tell me exactly when theyre going to call what theyre going to call. That would be the information Id like to know." Jeffers-Harris arrived at Winnipegs camp this year with extra weight hed put on in his quest to crack an NFL roster. The Georgia native becomes a free agent after this season and its believed hell seek another tryout south of the border. Carr and veteran Bombers slotback Terrence Edwards didnt have any ill feelings towards Jeffers-Harris for catching on with the Ticats. "It doesnt bother us whatsoever," said Edwards, who often gave his fellow Georgian advice on what to do on and off the field. "I dont know what (Hamiltons) motive is, but hes a good player, hes a nice piece that can play in this league. "It was unfortunate Denmark and Carr came along the way they did and he couldnt get back in the lineup." "Congrats to them and congrats to him," Carr added. "I dont find it odd because you never find anything odd. "T.J. is a good player. They went after a good player." Ticats quarterback Kevin Glenn described Jeffers-Harris as a great player and said he was happy to have him aboard. He also dismissed any spy value the former Bomber could provide. "Weve played them three times so they know us," Glenn said of his teams trio of losses this season. "I think sometimes people read too much into gameplans in professional football . . . you still have to go out there and execute whether you know what theyre doing or not." "Thats the great thing about baseball," Arroyo said. "I dont really have to beat Stephen, I just have to beat their batters for the most part." He also had a pair of hits off Strasburg, scoring the go-ahead run after the second one. "I just try to outthink him and try to guess what hes throwing," Arroyo said. "... I got lucky today. I hit two balls soft, but one of them turned out to be a huge hit and started off an inning that won us the ball game." Arroyo, a free agent signing in the off-season who was slowed by a sore back in spring training, struck out seven and walked one. Of his 110 pitches, 79 were strikes. "An incredible strike ratio," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "He kept them off-balance, threw a great game for us. Beyond that, got a couple of hits, ran the bases well again, fielded a good safety squeeze bunt, held the guy at first, got out of that inning. I mean, thats complete." Paul Goldschmidt doubled twice, the second one driving in the go-ahead runs in the fifth. Over his last three starts, Arroyo (4-2) has allowed one earned run in 23 1-3 innings. He also became the second pitcher to get two hits off Strasburg. The other was Tim Hudson. Strasburg (3-3) went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out six with no walks. "Overall I thought he itched fine," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "Bronson was better tonight though. All over the zone with all the pitches that he had, he kept everybody off balance." The Diamondbacks won for just the fourth time in 17 games at Chase Field this season. "You just want to get it done at home to show theres not somee sort of jinx going on," Arroyo said. As soon as it came out of my hand I knew it was probably not going to be good."
