(SportsNetwork.com) - The struggling Florida Panthers slow start to the season cost head coach Kevin Dineen his job. The Panthers will try to move forward with a new bench boss when they visit the Ottawa Senators for Saturdays matinee battle at Canadian Tire Centre. The Panthers, mired in a seven-game losing streak, announced the firing of Dineen and his assistant coaches, Gord Murphy and Craig Ramsay, on Friday morning. General manager Dale Tallon replaced Dineen with interim head coach Peter Horachek, who will have Brian Skrudland and John Madden serve as his assistant coaches. The coaching shake-up came the day after a 4-1 loss at Boston on Thursday. That setback dropped Florida to 0-3-4 during its current slide and to 3-9-4 on the season. "After 16 games it was clear that our team needed a change in philosophy and direction," Tallon said in a statement Friday. "We have not met the expectations that we set forth at training camp and it is my responsibility to make the necessary changes to ensure that our club performs at its maximum potential." Dineens tenure began with a 38-26-18 record and a Southeast Division title in 2011-12. The Panthers first playoff appearance since 2000 ended with a double-overtime loss to New Jersey in Game 7 of the opening round. However, Florida, ravaged by injuries, plummeted to the bottom of the standings last season, finishing with a league-low 36 points and a 15-27-6 record. Horachek, 53, inherits a team with an NHL-worst minus-25 goal differential. He was in his first season coaching the Panthers American Hockey League affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. Prior to his job in San Antonio, Horachek spent nine seasons (2003-13) with the Nashville Predators, serving the last two years as associate head coach. "Peter is a bright hockey mind who brings to our club a wealth of coaching knowledge," Tallon said. Florida sent 24 shots at net in Thursdays game versus the Bruins, but Tuukka Rask stopped 23 of them to anchor Boston in the 4-1 win at TD Garden. Jesse Winchester scored the lone Florida goal late in the third period, while Scott Clemmensen allowed all four goals on 30 shots in the loss. The Panthers, who will close a three-game road trip Sunday against the New York Rangers, fell to 1-5-1 as the visiting team this season. Horacheks first game behind the Florida bench will be in a venue thats been less to kind to the Panthers in recent years. Ottawa has won six straight and 10 of its last 13 home meetings versus Florida. Although the Panthers have won two of the past four encounters in this series, Ottawa has claimed 11 of the last 13 matchups. While the Panthers try to end a lengthy slide on Saturday, the Senators will aim for their first three-game winning streak of the season. Ottawa has recorded consecutive wins against Columbus and Montreal and is 2-0-2 so far in November after posting a disappointing 4-6-2 record in the first month of the season. Ottawa has won both tilts during its two-game streak by 4-1 margins. After earning a road win Tuesday in Columbus, the Senators notched a home win Thursday against Montreal. Bobby Ryan had one goal and two assists to lead Ottawa past the visiting Canadiens and begin a five-game homestand on a positive note. "We made up some valuable points. Thats essentially a four-point game there and weve got a game in hand on a team thats right ahead of us, so I think the thing well take from tonight is that we won a divisional game but we took care of our home ice," Ryan said. Marc Methot, Kyle Turris and Mark Borowiecki added one goal apiece and Clarke MacArthur finished with a pair of assists for the Senators, who had lost five straight before winning their last two outings. Robin Lehner made 33 saves in the win and is line to get his third straight start on Saturday. Lehner has filled in nicely since regular starter Craig Anderson suffered a head/neck injury last Sunday against Dallas. Anderson is expected to be available for todays game in a backup capacity. Nathan Lawson had been serving as a backup to Lehner while Anderson was out of the lineup. Ottawa is 2-3-2 as the host this season and will also welcome Philadelphia, Boston and Columbus to Canadas capital city before this homestand is over. http://www.panthersfansstore.com/Aleksander-Barkov-Jersey/ . -- Jonathan Drouin gave Halifax the boost it needed to edge host Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-2 in a shootout in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. http://www.panthersfansstore.com/Brian-Campbell-Jersey/ . The team also announced Tuesday that the Braves will wear a commemorative patch on the right sleeve during the season. The patch, shaped like home plate, carries the number 715, Aarons autograph and a "40th Anniversary" banner. http://www.panthersfansstore.com/Lawson-Crouse-Jersey/ . He was followed closely by David Clarkson, donning red, seconds later. Clarksons actions one night earlier, leaping off the bench in defence of Kessel during a pre-season game against the Buffalo Sabres, will cost him the first 10 games of the regular season.PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Carter-Williams had Allen Iverson cheering from his suite and left LeBron James impressed. Not a bad start for MCW. It was an even better one for the Sixers. Carter-Williams had a debut to remember, using 22 points, 12 assists, and nine steals to lead the Philadelphia 76ers past the Miami Heat 114-110 on Wednesday night. The rookie out of Syracuse nearly upstaged Iverson on a night Philly feted his spectacular career. "You see what he can bring on a big stage," 76ers rookie head coach Brett Brown said. MCW was the MVP of the fourth quarter, picking up two more steals, harassing James in the lane, and sealing the win from the free-throw line. Spencer Hawes scored 24 points and put the Sixers ahead for good with a 3-pointer, then a driving layup for a 109-108 lead with 2:01 left. "Everything was clicking tonight," Carter-Williams said. "If we can consistently play together, then we can be a good team." The guys in the locker room might be the only ones who think that. As the NBA season tipped off, the over-under out of Las Vegas for total wins for the 76ers this year is 16.5, the lowest of any team in the league. Against the two-time defending champion Heat, no one in Philly cared. James missed five of six shots in the fourth, losing the ball on one drive down the middle, then blowing a 6-footer on the next possession. Shane Battier missed all seven 3-pointers in the game and the Heat missed 10 straight shots in the fourth -- after scoring a whopping 45 points in the third. The Heat needed all those points to rally after the Sixers dominated from the opening tip. They made their first 11 shots and raced to leads of 19-0 and 26-4, putting the champs on their heels a night after they received their rings. James had 25 points and 13 assists and Chris Bosh scored 22 for Miami. Miami guard Dwyane Wade sat out to rest his sore knees. Coach Erik Spoelstra says he wanted to give Wade an extra day to recover with the Heat playing in consecutive nights. Wade scored 13 points for the Heat in their 107-95 win over Chicago on Tuesday. Carter-Williams also hit four 3-pointers, had seven rebounds and his nine steals set an NBA first-game record. "I coulddnt think of a better way to start your NBA career," James said.dddddddddddd. For most of the game, the Sixers played more like the team in the hunt for the championship, not one in full blown rebuilding mode. Iverson, Charles Barkley, Julius Erving and Moses Malone were among the former Sixers on hand for opening night. The Heat surely could have used Wade. Wade, though, had walked into locker room both knees wrapped in ice and an understanding it was too early in the season to push himself. He said it was "just being smart." "It was not pre-planned, it was something our trainers and coaches came to me with," Wade said. "Its early in the season, its just a precaution." James said Wade could take all the time he needed. "If he needs to take the second game of the season, the 30th game, 50th game, 80th game, thats the way it is," James said. After all, the Heat were a double-digit favourite to rout the Sixers, and expected to have little trouble against one of the worst teams in the NBA. Not so fast. Evan Turner scored 26 points and the Sixers dominated only hours after Iverson announced his retirement, ending a 14-year career. Carter-Williams had a steal and dunk to open the game, Turner dunked over James, and Hawes tossed in a layup for a stunning 19-0 run to open the game. James finally banked in a shot with 7:07 left in the first to end Miamis scoring drought. The Sixers still led 29-11 even with a lineup that included Tony Wroten, Lavoy Allen and Daniel Orton on the court. Who? Exactly. "Weve got a lot of pride, the guys that have been here and done it," Hawes said. The Heat, though, became the Heat and used a 14-0 run in the second quarter to pull to 51-49 at halftime. James hit a 3 that made it a one-point game, and Udonis Haslems inside layup gave the Heat their first lead of the game, 60-59. Ray Allen hit all four 3-pointers in the quarter, James made three and the Heat shot a sizzling 10 of 13 from 3-point range in the third. They finished 16 of 22 (73 per cent) from the floor overall and stretched the lead to 94-85. "Were a comfortable team, we always feel like we can win a game," James said. Just not this one.
