LONDON -- The head of the English Football Association has hailed Harry Redknapps "amazing" work at Tottenham while saying the vacant national team job is best suited to an older coach. Henrique Jersey . Following Fabio Capellos sudden resignation on Wednesday, the 64-year-old Redknapp is the main contender to lead England at the European Championship in four months. Amid an outpouring of support from England players for Redknapp, though, the FA has avoided anointing him publicly before making an approach to Tottenham. But, for the first time since Capello walked out of England, FA chairman David Bernstein has spoken publicly of his admiration for Redknapp and said "it would be nice to reflect the national mood." Redknapp seems to meet Bernsteins preference for an Englishman who can produce exciting football, having steered Tottenham to third in the Premier League having been bottom when he took charge in 2008. "We do understand the hype -- the guy has done amazingly recently," Bernstein said at Wembley Stadium. "He is a fine manager and he is English ... despite all this hype we need to come to a measured, professional decision." No English manager has been as successful as Redknapp recently, with Newcastle -- managed by fellow Londoner Alan Pardew -- crushed 5-0 on Saturday by Tottenham, which is five points off the league summit. Redknapp, though, has endured troubling times away from the dugout recently, undergoing heart surgery in November and going through a two-week criminal trial before being cleared of tax fraud on Wednesday. "Although there are huge pressures arising (from the England job), its a different dynamic from being a club manager as we all know," Bernstein said. "There arent 50 or 60 matches a year so in a way you could say this is more suited in some ways to an older person than club management where the demands are absolutely incessant." Bernstein insists there will be no "penny-pinching," recognizing the need to potentially pay compensation to prise a manager from a club. Redknapps White Hart Lane contract runs through to the end of the 2012-13 season. But if he found the Tottenham job too tempting to leave, the FA would have to ensure the coach hired did not feel like the second choice. "This job will be so attractive still to many people," Bernstein said. "(We) will get interest from serious parties or engender interest despite this particular hype (about Redknapp). So I am not bothered by the hype." Redknapp appears unlikely to take the England job before the end of the season, insisting he wont leave Tottenham "in the lurch." The FA said there was no need to rush the decision with no matches until May after the Feb. 29 friendly against the Netherlands, when under-21 coach Stuart Pearce will be in charge, and Euro 2012 not kicking off until June 11 against France. "There is time for an experienced manager to pick up the reigns," Bernstein said. Capello quit after four years following a disagreement with the FA over John Terry being stripped of the captaincy by Bernstein due to a pending trial on a racism charge. The Canadian mens Olympic hockey team head coach arranged to take in some mens curling with a bunch of players before shuffling off to the nearby Bolshoy Ice Dome to scout the Russia-United States mens hockey game.The Western Conference race remains fluid, as Chicagos recent losing streak and Anaheims surge leaves seven teams within ten points, with three playoff spots to be decided among them. Both the Columbus Blue Jackets and Edmonton Oilers have left little doubt what their role will be as the deadline nears, but the Ducks resurrection might make them less likely to sell than Minnesota, as the Wild have been slumping for quite some time now. The usual suspects -- Detroit, Vancouver, Chicago (despite their slide) -- will be primed to add pieces for a championship run and the St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks could be in that game as well. What about the Nashville Predators or Los Angeles Kings? Theyre in playoff position and could add too, so expect some loading up as teams jockey for position.. While some fringe teams will surely decide that selling is their best option, Columbus and Edmonton can safely assume that they will field a lot of calls. With 10 days to go before the deadline, the dealing business is about to pick up. A couple of notes about the following chart: Restricted Free Agents (RFA) have contracts that expire this summer, barring a contract extension in the meantime, but their current team retains the right to match a contract offer so long as they make the requisite qualifying offer. While restricted free agents havent moved a lot, its worth noting when decision time is coming on a young players contract. Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) have contracts that will expire this summer and, without a contract extension, they will be free to sign with whatever team they choose on July 1. These are the players that often move in "rental"-type deals, ideally providing a short-term fix with minimal commitment required. Top prospects are the top five players in each organization. Other top prospects or those that are now with the NHL team may be listed among other players of interest. Contending teams may be more likely to dangle a top prospect or two as they try to find that final piece for their playoff mix, while its safe to assume that young and rebuilding teams arent going to move top prospects unless they get a significant long-term piece in return. Other players of interest will include prospects who have spent some time in the NHL this season as well as players under contract for future seasons that may have some level of attractiveness on the trade market. IMPORTANT: Just because a player is listed as being of interest, it doesnt mean he will be traded or should be traded. Some may just be of interest for teams looking to hit a home run when trying to swing a deal or they are players that may be considered to be underachieving for the money they are due over the rest of their contract. Generally, then, heres a rough guide for which players each Western Conference team might have at their disposal in order to make a trade leading up to the deadline. The Plan: The Ducks were so far out of the playoff picture that it was easy to forecast them as sellers, but improved player over the last six weeks has them at least on the fringes of the playoff picture at this point. Veteran winger Jason Blake figures to be the easiest piece to move and if the Ducks fade, maybe Teemu Selanne would like one last shot at a Cup, but if Anaheim keeps winning, they wouldnt seem inclined to sell. There has been enough talk about Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf being possible trade targets, but a move of that magnitude may have to wait until the offseason. CALGARY FLAMES UFA in 2012: Olli Jokinen, Lee Stempniak, David Moss, Tom Kostopoulos, Tim Jackman, Cory Sarich, Scott Hannan. RFA in 2012: Blake Comeau, Mikael Backlund, Blair Jones, Leland Irving. Top Prospects: Sven Baertschi, LW, Portland (WHL) Greg Nemisz, RW, Abbotsford (AHL) Max Reinhart, C, Kootenay (WHL) John Gaudreau, LW, Boston College (HE) Joey Leach, D, Kootenay (WHL) Others of Interest: Chris Butler. The Plan: After acquiring Mike Cammalleri, Flames GM Jay Feaster insisted that the club would be pushing for a playoff spot and theyre knocking on the door now, despite several injuries up front. Adding a playmaking centre has long been a need and remains one now. The Flames recently dealt Brendan Morrison to Chicago and theyve acquired Blair Jones from Tampa Bay and Blake Comeau on waivers from the Islanders earlier in the season, but if they are going big-game hunting, the Flames will have to dig deep in order to come up with the kind of package that it takes to land a centre that can lend support to Olli Jokinen, who is having a fine season. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS UFA in 2012: Andrew Brunette, Dan Carcillo, Jamal Mayers, Brendan Morrison, Sean ODonnell, Sami Lepisto, John Scott, Ray Emery. RFA in 2012: None. The Plan: It didnt take long to find out that Brendan Morrison wasnt the answer that the Blackhawks were looking for as a second-line centre and Chicago just snapped a losing streak, so that remains an area of need if they are going to upgrade for the playoffs. Additionally, like any Cup hopeful, the Blackhawks would like to add on the blueline and have enough promising assets that they be significant players on the trade market. COLORADO AVALANCHE UFA in 2012: Milan Hejduk, David Jones, Jay McClement, Cody McLeod, Daniel Winnik, David Van der Gulik, Matt Hunwick, Shane OBrien. RFA in 2012: Matt Duchene, Peter Mueller, Ryan OReilly, Kevin Porter, T.J. Galiardi, Kyle Quincey, Erik Johnson, Ryan Wilson. The Plan: So long as the Avalanche remain in playoff contention, they cant very well turn into full-fledged sellers, but with so many pending unrestricted free agents, they could certainly offer solutions to teams that are looking for third and fourth-line upgrades. Given the emergence of Ryan OReilly as an offensive contributor, the Avalanche may also consider dealing Paul Stastny once Matt Duchene returns to action. Of course any move of that magnitude would have to bring quality -- a scoring winger, a top-four defenceman? -- in return. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS UFA in 2012: Kristian Huselius, Samuel Pahlsson, Derek MacKenzie, Radek Martinek, Brett Lebda, Aaron Johnson. RFA in 2012: Jared Boll, Derek Dorsett, Ryan Russell, Nikita Nikitin. Top Prospects: David Savard, D, Springfield (AHL)Cam Atkinson, RW, Springfield (AHL)Tomas Kubalik, RW, Springfield (AHL)Boone Jenner, C, Oshawa (OHL)Matt Calvert, LW, Springfield (AHL) Others of Interest: R.J. The Plan: This seasons disaster in Columbus does make the Blue Jackets very intriguing as the deadline approaches because they have so few untouchables. Rick Nash is available, if the Blue Jackets can work out a deal with one of his approved destinations, and Jeff Carter figures to be shopped even more aggressively. Columbus rebuilding effort pretty much demands that a goaltender be part of the haul for one of their top scoring forwards. The rebuilding has to begin in earnest now; the good news is that the Blue Jackets need pretty much everything and should be as motivated as any team in the league to sell off extraneous parts in order to start remodeling the roster. DALLAS STARS UFA in 2012: Radek Dvorak, Adam Burish, Jake Dowell, Toby Petersen, Sheldon Souray. RFA in 2012: Jamie Benn, Tom Wandell, Mark Fistric, Richard Bachman. Top Prospects: Alex Chiasson, RW, Boston University (HE)Jamie Oleksiak, D, Niagara (OHL)Matt Fraser, LW, Texas (AHL)Scott Glennie, C, Texas (AHL)Reilly Smith, RW, Miami-Ohio (CCHA) Others of Interest: Vernon Fiddler, Eric Nystrom, Adam Pardy. The Plan: The Stars have some interesting pieces, should they decide to sell, not least of all captain Brenden Morrow, but the Stars cant very well go into selling mode if they remain so close to a playoff spot. It would make more sense for new ownership to do some tweaking in order to improve the Stars chances at the postseason. A top-six forward should be the main priority if the Stars are bidding for a playoff berth, but upgrading their depth forwards could also be a reasonable area to address. DETROIT RED WINGS UFA in 2012: Jiri Hudler, Todd Bertuzzi, Tomas Holmstrom, Nicklas Lidstrom, Brad Stuart, Mike Commodore, Ty Conklin. RFA in 2012: Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader. Top Prospects: Brendan Smith, D, Grand Rapids (AHL)Tomas Tatar, LW, Grand Rapids (AHL)Gustav Nyquist, LW, Grand Rapids (AHL)Teemu Pulkkinen, RW, Jokerit (SML)Tomas Jurco, RW, Saint John (QMJHL) Others of Interest: Valtteri Filppula, Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Jan Mursak, Cory Emmerton. The Plan: As always, the Wings are contenders, so they should be looking to add some pieces before the deadline and can accomodate high-end skill or upgrades in the bottom half of the lineup. The Wings also have a talented group of prospects on the way up, so they dont need to overpay in their attempts to land a top-nine forward or a depth defenceman, but given the age of Detroits core players and their place at the top of the standings right now, there also should be some urgency to make a strong push for the Cup this season. EDMONTON OILERS UFA in 2012: Ryan Smyth, Ales Hemsky, Lennart Petrell, Darcy Hordichuk. RFA in 2012: Sam Gagner, Cam Barker, Theo Peckham, Jeff Petry. Top Prospects: Oscar Klefbom, D, Farjestads (SEL) Martin Marincin, D, Regina (WHL)Linus Omark, LW, Oklahoma City (AHL)David Musil, D, Vancouver (WHL)Teemu Hartikainen, C, Oklahoma City (AHL) Others of Interest: Eric Belanger, Ryan Jones, Magnus Paajarvi, Ben Eager, Anton Lander, Tom Gilbert. No-Trade Clauses: Ryan Smyth, Shawn Horcoff, Ryan Whitney. The Plan: Headed for another high pick in the 2012 draft, the Oilers have exciting young skilled forwards around which to build, but they need help, particularly on defence and, possibly, in goal. Edmontons most marketable commodity will be Ales Hemsky, their oft-injured winger who is having his worst year as a pro. Nevertheless, Hemsky will draw interest for teams looking for an upgrade in skill among their top six forwards and, since demand for top six wingers figures to outweigh supply, Hemsky should bring a decent return for the Oilers. Indications are that Ryan Smyth wants to stay in Edmonton, but he would fetch a few assets if he found an acceptable destination. LOS ANGELES KINGS UFA in 2012: Dustin Penner, Jarret Stoll, Scott Parse, Colin Fraser, Trent Hunter, Willie Mitchell. RFA in 2012: None. Top Prospects:Tyler Toffoli, RW, Ottawa (OHL)Derek Forbort, D, North Dakota (WCHA)Martin Jones, G, Manchester (AHL)Thomas Hickey, D, Manchester (AHL) Jake Muzzin, D, Manchester (AHL) Others of Interest: Brad Richardson, Kyle Clifford, Andrei Loktionov, Trevor Lewis, Alec Martinez, Davis Drewiske. No-Trade Clauses: None. The Plan: Darryl Sutter has brought better results since taking over behind the bench, lifting the Kings into a playoff spot, but the Kings lack of scoring makes offensive upgrades a high priority. A couple top nine forwards that might improve the Kings offensive output would be most welcome. Theyve actually dropped two AHL call-ups onto Mike Richards wings, so its pretty easy to see where the Kings would be inclined to make a move. Los Angeles has been mentioned as a suitor for Nash but, given the Kings Philadelphia Flyers connections, maybe Jeff Carter would be more feasible. In any case, the Kings will have to acquire some scoring help if they are going to maintain a spot in the postseason. MINNESOTA WILD UFA in 2012: Kyle Brodziak, Erik Christensen, Brad Staubitz,Warren Peters, Greg Zanon, Mike Lundin, Clayton Stoner, Josh Harding. RFA in 2012: Guillaume Latendresse, Carson McMillan, Nick Johnson, Justin Falk. Top Prospects: Mikael Granlund, C, HIFK-Helsinki (SML)Charlie Coyle, RW, Saint John (QMJHL)Jonas Brodin, D, Farjestads (SEL)Matt Hackett, G, Houston (AHL)Zack Phillips, RW, Saint John (QMJHL) Others of Interest: Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Niklas Backstrom. No-Trade Clauses: Dany Heatley, Mikko Koivu, Matt Cullen (limited), Marek Zidlicky. The Plan: After stunning success early in the season, the Wild have been free-falling since. Theyre not out of the playoff race yet, but will have to reverse their trend rather dramatically if theyre going to get back on the right side of the playoff threshold. It would be premature for the Wild to sell off prospects in order to improve short-term, but it seems increasingly likely that veteran blueliner Marek Zidlicky, who has fallen out of favour but could provide a power play quarterback to another team, will be shipped out before the deadline. NASHVILLE PREDATORS UFA in 2012: Jordin Tootoo, Brandon Yip, Brian McGrattan, Ryan Suter, Hal Gill, Francis Bouillon. RFA in 2012: Sergei Kostitsyn, Colin Wilson, Shea Weber, Jack Hillen, Anders Lindback. Top Prospects: Jonathon Blum D, Milwaukee (AHL) Michael Latta, C, Milwaukee (AHL)Taylor Beck, RW, Milwaukee (AHL) Austin Watson, RW, London (OHL) Mattias Ekholm, D, Brynas (SEL) Others of Interest: Patric Hornqvist, Nick Spaling, Jerred Smithson, Matt Halischuk, Gabriel Bourque, Roman Josi. No-Trade Clauses: Martin Erat, David Legwand. The Plan: The primary concern for the Predators may be the status of defenceman Ryan Suter, who will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, but thats a concern for another time. The Predators are firmly in playoff position and have acquired Hal Gill to bolster their blueline, so that would seem to suggest a team that is pushing for results this season. The Predators can continue to improve their depth and, even though theyre scoring enough, the Predators would still have to consider any opportunity to add a high-end offensive player. (There have even been rumblings, however fanciful, of an Alexander Radulov return.) The Predators have tended towards making measured moves, like last seasons addition of two-way pivot Mike Fisher, and the results have been generally favourable, while still allowing the Predators to keep a strong farm system. PHOENIX COYOTES UFA in 2012: Shane Doan, Daymond Langkow, Ray Whitney, Taylor Pyatt, Michal Rozsival, Adrian Aucoin, Kurt Sauer. RFA in 2012: Gilbert Brule, Kyle Chipchura. Top Prospects: Brandon Gormley, D, Shawinigan (QMJHL)Connor Murphy, D, Sarnia (OHL)Viktor Tikhonov, LW, St. Petersburg (KHL)Chris Brown, C, Michigan (CCHA)Michael Stone, D, Portland (AHL) Others of Interest: Lauri Korpikoski, Raffi Torres. No-Trade Clauses: Shane Doan, Daymond Langkow, Ray Whitney, Radim Vrbata (modified), Michal Rozsival (limited), Derek Morris (limited), Adrian Aucoin (modified). The Plan: Though the Coyotes have climbed into playoff position, theyre mentioned frequently as a target for contending teams, with veterans like Shane Doan and Ray Whitney holding appeal for many teams. Its hard to imagine Doan in another sweater, but the perpetual uncertainty of the franchise, combined with his contract status, does at least lead to the possibility of a deal. Otherwise, Whitney and veteran defencemen Aucoin and Rozsival would be reasonable acquisitions. Of course, as long as the Coyotes are sitting in a playoff spot, its not likely that they can justify selling assets that might hinder their chances to make the postseason. ST. LOUIS BLUES UFA in 2012: Jason Arnott, Jamie Langenbrunner, Scott Nichol, Chris Porter, Barret Jackman, Carlo Colaiacovo, Kent Huskins. RFA in 2012: Chris Stewart, T.J. Oshie, David Perron. Top Prospects:Vladimir Tarasenko, RW, St. Petersburg (KHL)Jaden Schwartz, LW, Colorado College (WCHA)Ty Rattie, RW, Portland (WHL)Philip McRae, C, Peoria (AHL)Evgeny Grachev, LW, Peoria (AHL) Others of Interest: Patrik Berglund, Matt DAgostini, Kris Russell, Ian Cole. No-Trade Clauses: Andy McDonald, Jason Arnott, Barret Jackman The Plan: The way the Blues have played since Ken Hitchcock took over as head coach, they have to operate as a Cup contender this season, even if its on a budget, which means filling in the holes so that they can make the most of the strong goaltending theyve been getting from Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak. While goals dont come that easily to the Blues, their lineup might be bolstered internally now that they have Andy McDonald back from a concussion (and await the return of Alexander Steen). Chris Stewart and Patrik Berglund, have more to offer than what theyve produced thus far, but Stewart might also be a viable trade chip if the Blues aim to make a more significant trade. SAN JOSE SHARKS UFA in 2012: Dominic Moore, Torrey Mitchell, Brad Winchester, Andrew Murray, Jim Vandermeer, Colin White. RFA in 2012: Tommy Wingels, Jamie McGinn, Benn Ferriero, Andrew Desjardins, Justin Braun. Top Prospects: Matt Nieto, RW, Boston University (HE)Nick Petrecki, D, Worcester (AHL)Taylor Doherty, D, Worcester (AHL)Tyson Sexsmith, G, Worcester (AHL)Konrad Abeltshauser, D, Halifax (QMJHL) Others of Interest: Martin Havlat, Jason Demers. Since the Sharks dont have a great group of prospects, their currency may be in young NHLers like Jamie McGinn, Benn Ferriero, Tommy Wingels and Justin Braun or draft picks. VANCOUVER CANUCKS UFA in 2012: Aaron Volpatti, Andrew Ebbett, Sami Salo, Aaron Rome, Alexander Sulzer. RFA in 2012: Mason Raymond, Dale Weise, Cory Schneider. Top Prospects: Nicklas Jensen, RW, Oshawa (OHL)Chris Tanev, D, Chicago (AHL)Eddie Lack, G, Chicago (AHL)Jordan Schroeder, C, Chciago (AHL)Kevin Connauton, D, Chicago (AHL) Others of Interest: Keith Ballard, Andrew Alberts. The Plan:Now that the Canucks are finally healthy, they are as talented as any team in the league, with excellent depth, but it wouldnt be altogether surprising to see them target more toughness that they can include in their postseason lineup. Last years loss to Boston in the Cup Final, to say nothing of a possible matchup against Chicago, should emphasize the Canucks need to get down and dirty when the situation demands it.
