RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Detroit Red Wings dominated the game but had little to show for it -- until they rallied for the win. Stephen Weiss scored at 3:13 of overtime and the Red Wings came back from two goals down in the third period to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Friday night. Henrik Zetterberg tied it with a goal with 16.4 seconds left in the third, after Justin Abdelkader started the rally by scoring in the first minute of the period. "Got one early, got one late and were able to get one in overtime," Weiss said. Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for the Red Wings -- who never led until Weiss game-ending goal despite outshooting Carolina 38-25 and earning a victory in their first road game since moving to the Eastern Conference. "We liked our first period. ... We just said, Stay patient and stick with the plan," Weiss said. "We needed to get one early (in the third), which we did, and that was huge." Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe scored in their debuts with Carolina, which led 2-0 in the third, but lost its opener for the fourth time in five seasons. Justin Faulk added two assists and Cam Ward made 35 saves for the Hurricanes. "Effort-wise, I thought everyone came hard tonight to play," Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. "We pushed. Detroit forces you to skate. We said before the game, We cant have a letup, guys. Theyre not going to stop." They certainly didnt. Zetterberg sent it into overtime when he pushed a loose puck past Ward after a scramble in front of the net. Ward lost his stick while stopping a shot from Daniel Alfredsson a moment earlier. "Obviously, thats the way you want to go into overtime," Zetterberg said. "You want to be the team that ties the game up." Weiss -- a perennial nemesis for Carolina who spent 11 seasons with former Southeast Division rival Florida before signing with Detroit in the off-season -- then ended it when he stuffed a loose puck past Ward. "I followed up and it squirted out to me, and I was able to get a stick on it," Weiss said. Zetterberg also had an assist for the unbeaten Red Wings, who couldnt get anything past Ward until Abdelkader finally solved him 42 seconds into the third. "We knew we wanted to try to get that first one to get things going," Abdelkader said. "I think after we got that, we started getting some more chances, we really came on and obviously, that was a huge goal at the end." Detroit shifted from the Western Conference to the East as part of the NHLs realignment, which also moved the Hurricanes into the new Metropolitan Division. The Southeast was dissolved. Dvorak and Gerbe were two of five players skating for the first time in Carolina red. Dvorak, a veteran forward who came to Carolinas preseason camp on a tryout basis, earned a one-year contract Wednesday while Gerbe signed a one-year free-agent deal in late July after playing parts of the past five seasons with Buffalo. Dvorak put the Hurricanes up 1-0 with 6:30 left in the first, chipping Jeff Skinners long cross-ice pass over Howards shoulder. Gerbe then struck with 1:49 left in the second, in the final seconds of a holding penalty on Brendan Smith. Gerbe positioned himself near the net, scooped up a deflected shot and whipped it past Howard to put Carolina up 2-0. "There was no panic in the room," Weiss said. NOTES: Carolina RW Alexander Semin and Detroits Zetterberg each rang the post. ... Faulk wore an "A" on his sweater because regular alternate captain, D Tim Gleason, was out with a concussion. ... This was the first meeting between the teams since March 24, 2012. They play twice more this season. Kris Bryant Jersey . -- Derrick Rose shook off poor shooting early to hit clutch shots late and Carlos Boozer had 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 104-95 preseason victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night. Alan Trammell Tigers Jersey . U.S. District Judge Lorna G. Schofield in Manhattan agreed that lawyers on both sides could make their formal requests by Nov. 8. A hearing is scheduled for a day earlier. Jordan Siev, a lawyer for Rodriguez, wrote in a joint letter to the judge from lawyers on both sides that MLB lawyers planned to ask that the lawsuit be dismissed. http://www.baseballgreet.com/Pittsburgh-Pirates-St...te-Jers ey/ .C. -- Glenn Howard needed an extra end to move into the Masters Grand Slam of Curling final. Roberto Clemente Pirates Jersey . 10 Texas A&Ms offence dominated as usual against SMU. Ryne Sandberg Jersey . Ashley Youngs cross was inadvertently headed by Chester into his own net in the 66th minute, allowing United to claim a third straight league win. "We had to dig deep with our fighting spirit and weve done that," United striker Wayne Rooney said.MILWAUKEE -- Joey Votto contorted his body in the batters box as if he was trying to will his towering fly ball to stay fair as it sailed down the right field line. It did. Barely. The ball bounced off the foul pole for a two-run homer, helping the Cincinnati Reds keep pace in the NL Central race with a 7-3 victory Saturday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Maybe Vottos drive will be the spark that gets some of the Reds best hitters going down the stretch of a tight pennant chase. The Reds had lost three of their previous four. "Every game, from my perspective, its as important in April as it is in September," Votto said. "But, weve got a pretty good idea of whats happening around you. You have an idea of whos behind you and whos ahead of you, how many games you need to make up." The Pirates won Saturday night to draw even atop the division with the Cardinals, who lost. The Reds are 2 1/2 games behind both teams. Cincinnati is also trying to fend off Washington in the wild-card race. The Nationals fell 5 1/2 games back after losing to the Phillies. Homer Bailey (11-10) allowed three runs over seven innings in winning his career-best sixth straight decision. Votto and leadoff hitter Shin-Soo Choo each finished 2 of 3 with three RBIs and two-run homers. "We scored enough runs and got a win," Bailey said. "We needed it." Driving in runs has been a challenge for four of the Reds big bats in September. Brandon Phillips, Ryan Ludwick, Jay Bruce and Votto had combined for 13 RBIs in 12 games this month entering Saturday. Manager Dusty Baker met privately with some hitters before the game. The Reds skipper declined to give details. Regardless of who was in the meeting, and what was said, the bats broke through. Fifth-place hitter Ludwick was 2 of 5, while No. 6 Todd Frazier went 2 of 4 with an RBI. Votto said he waited at the plate during his homer only because he wasnt sure if it would go foul. Too bad for the Brewers. "I was hoping that ball had a lot of hook in it," manager Ron Roenicke said. "But it got up there and stayed there." The homer travelled an estimated 470 feet, tied with a long ball by Rickie Weeks in 2011 for the ffourth-longest in the 11-year history of Miller Park.dddddddddddd The Brewers had a shot in the eighth after Jeff Bianchi was walked by Sam LeCure to load the bases with two outs for pinch-hitter Jonathan Lucroy. Baker responded by bringing in All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman in the eighth. The last time he faced the hard-throwing closer, on Aug. 16 at Miller Park, Lucroy hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Milwaukee a 7-6 win. Same ballpark, different result. This time, Lucroy swung at a 100 mph heater in the dirt. The ball skipped past the plate and bounced off the backstop, though catcher Devin Mesoraco retrieved it in time to throw out Lucroy at first. "To repeat something like that, really tough," Roenicke said about Lucroys chances of success again off Chapman. "At a 101 mph, its tough." Chapman walked two in the ninth, but struck out the last two batters to finish off his 36th save. Brewers rookie Johnny Hellweg (1-4), making his fifth career major league start, allowed eight hits and four runs, and hit three batters over five innings. Carlos Gomez had two hits and an RBI for the Brewers, while Jean Segura stole his NL-leading 43rd base of the season. They got outmuscled by Choo and Votto at the plate. Choo reached on a walk with one out in the sixth. One out later, Votto turned on a fastball from reliever Michael Blazek for his 23rd homer and a 6-3 lead. Bailey allowed five hits, with the Brewers causing all their damage in the fourth. Khris Davis, back in the lineup after missing more than a week with a sore left wrist, doubled home Scooter Gennett. Gomez singled home Davis. The speedy Gomez then stole his 36th base before advancing home on two consecutive sacrifice flies to get Milwaukee to 4-3. Vottos homer two innings later gave the Reds a three-run cushion again. NOTES: Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez (left wrist) was unavailable after being hit by a pitch Friday night. He was considered day to day ... Milwaukee is testing different tinting and shading on windows near the roof down the right-field line in an effort to help reduce glare during day games. The team hopes to have its chosen option in place for next season.
