CHICAGO -- Danny Salazar and Ryan Raburn helped the Cleveland Indians keep pace in the American League wild-card playoff race. The Cleveland bullpen also played a role, too. Salazar struck out nine in 3 2-3 innings, Raburn hit an RBI double in the fifth, and the Indians earned a 3-1 win Friday over the Chicago White Sox. Cleveland defeated Chicago for the 10th consecutive time this season and leads the season series 13-2. The Indians have outscored Chicago 91-49 with four games left between the teams. Salazar is the first Indians starting pitcher since 1916 to strike out at least nine batters in less than four innings. After allowing Dayan Viciedos single with two outs in the fourth on his 78th pitch, he was replaced by Nick Hagadone with runners on first and third. His pitch count was 85 entering the game. "Today I felt good," Salazar said. "Too many pitches." The bullpen, however, made up for that. Hagadone, the first of seven relievers, got pinch-hitter Josh Phegley to ground out and end the fourth. It culminated with Chris Perez earning his 24th save in 28 chances, getting Paul Konerko to fly to centre with runners on first and second to end the game. Jordan Danks also flew out to the wall in deep centre to start the ninth, forcing Michael Bourn to make a leaping catch on the warning track. Combined, the seven Cleveland relievers pitched 5 1-3 innings and only one unearned run. Bryan Shaw (4-3) threw two innings for the win. "Its been good to be able to match up like we have," said Matt Albers, who threw a scoreless third of an inning. "Weve got quite a few left-handed power arms and weve got some righties who can get some guys up. We can probably just match up from the seventh inning on." Raburn went 1 for 3 before getting removed for a pinch-runner in the fifth, one day after playing for the third time since Aug. 18 because of a left heel injury. Raburn has 17 homers and 67 RBIs against the White Sox in 90 games, and his double in the fifth gave the Indians a 2-0 lead. It wasnt quite like Thursday when he went 3 for 3 with a homer and five RBIs, but it was enough for Cleveland. "Just trying to have good at-bats," Raburn said. "Thats all Im doing." The White Sox arent really doing that, and it prevented them from overcoming a short outing by their starter. Hector Santiago (4-9) remained winless since Aug. 18 for Chicago, going four innings and giving up three runs and six hits while walking three. Santiagos outing was his second shortest since pitching 2 1-3 against the Indians on June 28, when he gave up five earned runs. Unlike White Sox manager Robin Ventura, who said Santiagos wildness might have been caused by fatigue, Santiago was adamant that wasnt the case. "I dont think it had anything to do with tiredness," said Santiago, whos thrown 142 2-3 innings. "The velocitys still there. They battled. I feel like I made good pitches." Santiago and the Chicago pitchers also got little support from the struggling White Sox lineup. Chicago was held to three runs or fewer for the 74th time and has scored five runs in its past four games, all losses. The White Sox have dropped 13 of 15 and fell a season-high 31 games below .500. Chicagos best threat came in the seventh trailing 3-1 when Danks and Marcus Semien singled to start the inning against Cody Allen. Alexei Ramirez then lined out to short, and Allen was replaced by Marc Rzepczynski, who struck out Dunn for the second out of the inning. Albers relieved Rzepczynski and got Konerko to ground to third. Chicago left 13 on base and was 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position. "We did (have opportunities). Even in the last inning, guys still get on base to try and get something going. We had a couple of balls hit hard," Ventura said. "Paulie hit his well and Jordan the same thing. We just couldnt cash that one hit in when we needed it." The Indians did. "Today we didnt have a ton of runs, but we made their starter throw a lot of pitches and we got him out of the game and sometimes thats the way you win," Indians manager Terry Francona said. NOTES: Cleveland RHP Justin Masterson played catch from 75 feet on Friday, one day after throwing from 60. Masterson hasnt pitched since Sept. 2 when he left his start against Baltimore with a strained left oblique. ... Cleveland is carrying 15 relief pitchers, and Francona was asked if its hard to restrain himself from immediately going to the bullpen when a starter first falters. "I think, when you dont give your starter a chance, as long as their stuff looks OK, I think youre asking for trouble," Francona said. ... Dunn went 0 for 4 and dropped to 3 for 34 over his past 10 games. . Saturdays pitching matchup is Clevelands Ubaldo Jimenez (11-9, 3.62) against Chicagos Andre Rienzo (2-1, 4.50). In an interview outside his home with Denver television stations KCNC and KMGH this week, the Broncos defensive lineman said hes back up to 280 pounds, having regained 20 of the 30 pounds he lost last season, and will resume training next week. "Im ready to go. Im going to be better than I was," said Wolfe, who had been reticent to talk to reporters during the season as he and his doctors were stumped by his symptoms that included weight loss and irritability. Wolfe was sidelined for 10 days in August after his arms and legs went numb following a frightening hit in a preseason game at Seattle on Aug. 17. He was cleared in time for the opener against Baltimore. Then, on a bus ride to the airport for a flight to Kansas City on Nov. 29, Wolfe suffered a seizure and was taken to University Hospital in Denver, where he underwent a battery of tests over four days. Wolfe practiced just twice after that, on Dec. 25 and 27, after which the Broncos sent him home to rest, realizing he wouldnt be able to return to help shore up their defence in the playoffs. "I had a bruise on my spinal cord," Wolfe told the stations. "... I thought it was fully healed and I came back a little too soon and I just kept hitting it, kept hitting it, kept hitting it. And it screwed my nervous system up a little bit, just kind of crisscrossed the wires a little bit. "And really just mentally, it was hard to deal with because I didnt know what was going on and why I was losing weight and all this, and my adrenals werent functioning right, nothing was really working right and what it came down to was I needed to let it heal, I needed to let myself heal. So, I took about two months and I just did nothing. And I feel better than Ive ever felt before." Wolfe saaid the seizure he suffered on the bus ride to the airport wasnt the kind where theres foaming at the mouth or convulsions but one in which he just suddenly felt very tired and started sweating profusely, which he dismissed as the effects of having just showered after practice and putting on his three-piece suit.dddddddddddd "I was thinking I just need to get to the plane so I can take a nap," Wolfe recounted. He started to slump into the aisle, however, and Von Miller grabbed him and "Terrance Knighton started yelling, Stop the bus! Stop the bus!" Wolfe recounted. Twenty-six hours later, Wolfe woke up in intensive care. So confused about where he was and why he was strapped down, he broke the hospital bed before he could be calmed down, he said. At first, he didnt realize hed been there that long and his first question was whether hed be able to play against the Chiefs that weekend. Doctors told him theyd had to put him in a medically induced coma to run tests and do spinal taps to rule out such things as brain tumors. After his comeback stalled in December and he realized he wasnt going to get back on the field for the playoffs, Wolfe retreated to his home a few miles from team headquarters and he said didnt even watch football for a while. He did go to the Super Bowl, however, in New Jersey, where he and several other defensive starters such as Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr., Kevin Vickerson and Rahim Moore watched helplessly from the sideline as the Broncos were throttled 43-8 by the Seattle Seahawks. "It was tough to sit there and watch it happen because I think if our defence was healthy, its a different ballgame," Wolfe said. "... Nothing against Seattle, theyre a great football team and they played a really good game and they had a great season, but I just really would have liked to see what it would have been like to have our true defence out there."
